klavoor: forming

smooth mindful aging

Inclusive Design and Thoughtful Technology

PROJECT

OBJECTIVE

As the aging population is growing with the minute, facilitating their wellbeing and quality of life has become a pressing issue. Older adults face the unprepared risks of isolation, depression and other negative effects that comes with aging which is often overlooked and under-addressed. This project, in collaboration with Ontmoet en Groet, a community centre for older adults in Eindhoven, aimed to address these issues.

The design objective is to empower older adults to lead a more fulfilled, reflective and healthy journey into their years.
My aim was to cultivate a mindset of mindful aging, focusing on appreciating the present and embracing realistic positivity.

Outcome

& Key Learnings

Prioritze needs over wants

A key learning point from this project is the need to balance user preferences with designer insights. Early in the process, older adults expressed a strong preference for analog designs, a generational bias that influenced the project approach significantly. While it was crucial to respect their preferences, this inclination led us to overlook potential technological enhancements that could have enriched the design. Integrating simple digital features, like an app to track and share reflections or a digital interface to display conversation prompts, could have added a layer of engagement and accessibility for the facilitator and counselors. These technological tools might have provider a more interactive experiences, ultimately leading to a more fruitful outcome.

In the end, this project resulted in Klavoor, a conversational tool aimed at fostering self-awareness and social connection among older adults at Ontmoet en Groet Huys in Eindhoven. By encouraging gratitude and appreciation for everyday achievements, Klavoor supports a reflective journey through conversation. It builds on an existing tool, adding a dimension that promotes mindfulness and a sense of community.

Aging mindfully is a journey best undertaken within a community. Klavoor fosters a positive mindset and, hopefully in the long run, a sense of purpose—one petal at a time. If the additional years gained through modern technology and medicine are dominated by declines in physical and mental capacity, both current and future generations of older adults, as well as society as a whole, will suffer.

Design

approach

The Double Diamond model was used together with The Design Thinking process. This emphasises the user as center point of the design process allowing for in-depth foundational knowledge about the needs and context of the involved, while also allowing for an iterative process. Throughout the process usability evaluations moments were planned that could uncover paint points quickly, while also keeping an eye on specific evolving needs.

Rapid prototyping and testing with target users were the core methods for validating and refining the design. Frequent usability testings enabled the identification of pain points and opportunities for improvement early in the process. Early on it was for example discovered and decided in what setting the design would be most effective, which was the common living room area which was unlike the assumption private rooms would be best.

Close emphasising and volunteering provided insight in how the culture in this specific context was organised. Stakeholders including the older adults themselves, but also the facilitators and community center staff were involved in multiple stages of the process.
Engaging with multiple stakeholders was integral to the design process, ensuring a collaborative and inclusive approach. This engagement facilitated a mutual understanding of challenges and opportunities, allowing for the co-creation of meaningful solutions. By gathering qualitative data through stakeholder interactions, insights were gained that guided design decisions. Stakeholder engagement also nurtured a sense of ownership and commitment to the final solution, enhancing its relevance and potential impact within the community.

Given the project's future-centered nature, speculative design methods like design scenarios and the design fiction matrix were used to explore innovative solutions. This approach allowed for envisioning and provoking potential changes, addressing the complex problem of mindful aging.
